5 lessons learned from 6 months in the desert…

1️⃣ It’s over-used but true… whether you think you can, or you think you can’t, you’re right.

If I didn’t believe in my ability to build this Zome (despite having near-zero construction experience), I never would have even gotten started.

2️⃣ Just get started.

Until you’re IN IT, you won’t care about learning. Just get started. Take the first step and the second will reveal itself. Take the second and you’ll find the third.

If you wait until you can see every step clearly, you will never get started. Walk and the path will be revealed. Or you’ll just carve the damn path yourself!

3️⃣ You are capable of FAR more than you think you are.

There were many points in this build that I thought I would never finish it. That it would be too hard, too complicated, too much work.

Yet, I did it. The structure is built. It’s not fully done yet, but the hardest parts are behind me. In doing it, I proved to myself that I could do it. You just don’t know until you try.

4️⃣ Invest in your goals in a way that forces you to follow through.

I bought the land. I bought the plans. But nothing was guaranteed until I placed the order for the lumber that was delivered and simply HAD to be built and finished — or else I would lose my investment through rain, warping, and rot.

Once the lumber was on my land, I had no choice but to finish the build or lose the money I invested in it.

And to be honest, there were MANY times where that was the ONLY thing that got me to push through the pain of learning and doing hard labor in the blistering sun through the sand storms. I would have given up if I knew I didn’t have anything to lose.

5️⃣ Let your imagination take you places.

After buying the land, I saw a TikTok by @trilliumdomes showing off his geodesic building plans and thought “wow, that would be SO cool to have on my property.”

I could see it clear as day. I imagined myself staring at it. Sleeping in it. Showing it off.

The first step is letting yourself sit in the world of possibilities and figuring out what you want to make a reality. Play with reality.
